The setting

In the breathtaking setting of Cabarete, Dominican Republic, the “Master of the Ocean” was determined, the ultimate water sports event that combined all five disciplines – windsurfing, surfing, stand up paddle, kitesurfing and wingsurfing. HFMEDIA was commissioned by the renowned windsurfing agency and content creator “JAKLAR” to capture the emotion, action and glamor of this event.

The event

The “Master of the Ocean” event in Cabarete, Dominican Republic, combines the five water sports windsurfing, surfing, stand up paddle, kitesurfing and wingsurfing in one ultimate competition. The athletes compete against each other in heats, with the best advancing to the Losers and Winners finals. The aim of the event is not only to select the best team, but also to find the ultimate “Waterman” who can master all five sports at an extremely high level. With athletes such as Brian Talma, Alina Adisaka and many others, the stage was set for a spectacular production.

The production

The production presented us with a number of challenges. In addition to the long journey and the associated jet lag, it was difficult to adjust to the warm weather in February. It also required a constant effort to protect the camera equipment from the sand on the beach to prevent damage. The frequent schedule changes and postponed competitions due to inadequate conditions for the respective sports made production even more complex. Transporting the high-quality equipment to the Dominican Republic was also a challenge, with problems with the airlines and customs. Nevertheless, with our first-class equipment and the use of drones to offer new perspectives, we managed to maximize quality and get up close to the action

Traveling with lots of equipment

Despite these obstacles, we managed to transport our high-quality equipment, including a 600mm long lens, gimbals, tripods and prore recorders, to the Dominican Republic with great effort. The use of drones opened up new perspectives and allowed us to capture the action and the athletes from a unique angle – a real challenge in the changing wind conditions.

Conclusion

However, the result was overwhelmingly positive: thanks to the fantastic location and the thrilling action, impressive images were created and all planned formats were successfully implemented. The production of “Master of the Ocean” was a triumph, expressing the beauty and fascination of water sports in all its facets.
